Iran’s new supreme leader delivers worrying threat in first statement

Mojtaba Khamenei, the newly elevated Supreme Leader of Iran, has purportedly issued his first public address since the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. However, the nature of the broadcast has done little to quell international speculation regarding his physical condition, even as the message delivered a series of escalatory threats against the West.

The statement was aired on Iranian state television this past Thursday. Notably, the address was not delivered by Khamenei in person; instead, a news anchor recited the text over a static image of the new leader. The Iranian government offered no explanation for Khamenei’s absence from the camera, an omission that has fueled conflicting reports about his health.

The Shadow of Sina University Hospital

Mojtaba Khamenei has vanished from the public eye since being named the successor to his father, who was killed in a precision Israeli air strike during the opening stages of the current conflict. Earlier this week, a source within Iran told The Sun that the younger Khamenei was not merely in hiding, but was in fact fighting for his life at Sina University Hospital in Tehran.

The source alleged that Khamenei is currently in a coma after sustaining catastrophic injuries during the strikes.

“One or two of his legs have been cut off. His liver or stomach has also ruptured. He is apparently in a coma as well,” the source claimed, according to The Sun.

Contradicting these grim assessments, other Iranian sources have dismissed the reports of a coma as propaganda. These counter-reports suggest the Supreme Leader sustained only minor injuries while at a hardened, protected location during the bombardment and remains in control of the state.

A Vow of “Total Revenge”

Despite the questions surrounding his health, the rhetoric attributed to Khamenei in the televised statement was unflinching. He addressed the ongoing war directly, promising a campaign of retaliation that extends beyond the loss of the previous Supreme Leader.

“I assure everyone that we will not refrain from avenging the blood of your martyrs,” the statement read, as reported by CBS News. “The retaliation we have in mind is not limited only to the martyrdom of the great leader of the revolution; rather, every member of the nation who is martyred by the enemy constitutes a separate case in the file of revenge.”

Khamenei further lauded the efforts of the Iranian military, praising them for standing against what he termed the “front of arrogance.” He credited the nation’s “brave fighters” with dispelling the “illusion” that the enemy could dominate or partition the country.

Economic Warfare and New Fronts

The statement also outlined a aggressive strategic shift, warning that Iran would seek financial restitution from its adversaries—by force if necessary.

“If it refuses, we will take from its assets to the extent we deem appropriate, and if that is not possible, we will destroy its assets to the same extent,” Khamenei warned.

Of particular concern to global markets was the explicit mention of the Strait of Hormuz. Khamenei confirmed that the “lever” of closing the vital oil transit point would remain a primary tool of Iranian policy. Furthermore, he hinted at the expansion of the conflict into theater where the enemy is “highly vulnerable.”

“Studies have also been conducted on opening other fronts in which the enemy has little experience,” the statement continued. “Their activation will take place, if the wartime situation continues and in accordance with considerations of expediency.”

Personal Loss and the “Clenched Fist”

The address concluded on a somber and highly personal note, with Khamenei describing the aftermath of the strike that claimed his father’s life. He revealed that several members of his family were killed in the same attack.

“I had the honor of seeing his body after his martyrdom,” Khamenei said. “What I saw was a mountain of steadfastness, and I was told that the fist of his intact hand had been clenched.”

As the war enters a new and more volatile phase, the world remains focused on whether Mojtaba Khamenei will eventually appear in person to lead these promised “new fronts,” or if the silence from Tehran indicates a leadership crisis more severe than the regime is willing to admit.
