The Stranger Behind the Bathroom Door (Part 1)
Emma had been counting down the minutes until the end of her shift. The day had been packed with meetings, endless emails, and unexpected problems that seemed to appear one after another. By the time she left the office, the evening sky had already turned a deep shade of blue, and the streets were glowing under rows of streetlights.
The drive home was quiet. She turned on the radio, hoping music would help clear her mind, but even her favorite songs couldn’t erase the exhaustion she felt. All she wanted was a warm shower, comfortable clothes, and a peaceful evening with her boyfriend, Ryan.
When she finally parked in front of their small rental house, she noticed everything looked perfectly normal. The porch light was on, and one of the living room lamps cast a warm glow through the front window. Nothing seemed out of place.
Emma unlocked the front door and stepped inside.
The house was unusually quiet.
Normally, Ryan would hear the door open and greet her with a smile, asking how her day had gone. Sometimes he would already have dinner cooking or be sitting in the living room waiting for her.
Tonight was different.
She quietly placed her handbag on the hallway table and looked toward the living room. Ryan was asleep on the couch with a blanket pulled over him. The television was still on, but the volume was so low that it barely filled the room.
Emma smiled.
“He must have had a long day too,” she whispered to herself.
Not wanting to wake him, she slipped off her shoes and walked toward the bedroom to change into something comfortable. After placing her work clothes in the laundry basket, she grabbed a towel and headed toward the bathroom.
A hot shower sounded like the perfect way to end the day.
She reached for the bathroom light switch and stepped inside.
At first, nothing seemed unusual.
The mirror was covered with a thin layer of steam, as though someone had showered recently. Emma assumed Ryan had simply forgotten to turn on the bathroom fan.
She smiled again.
“Typical,” she muttered.
As she set her towel on the counter, something caught her attention.
The shower curtain moved.
It wasn’t a dramatic movement—just a slow, gentle sway.
Emma stopped.
Maybe the window was open?
She looked around.
The bathroom window was completely shut.
For several seconds she stood perfectly still, listening.
Drip.
Drip.
Drip.
Water fell from the showerhead into the bathtub.
Her heartbeat became noticeably louder.
Then she saw it.
A dark silhouette behind the curtain.
Someone was standing there.
Emma felt every muscle in her body tense. Her mind raced through countless explanations, each one less believable than the last.
Maybe Ryan was playing a joke?
But he had been asleep only moments earlier.
The figure shifted again.
Emma instinctively took a step backward.
“Ryan?” she called cautiously.
No answer.
Her breathing became faster.
The curtain slowly moved once more.
Before she could react, it was pulled aside.
A man she had never seen before stepped out of the shower area.
His hair was wet, and water dripped onto the bathroom floor. He looked just as startled as Emma, as though neither of them had expected to see the other.
For a split second, both of them simply stared.
Then Emma screamed.
She ran from the bathroom as fast as she could, nearly slipping on the hallway floor.
“Ryan!” she shouted.
Ryan woke instantly.
“What happened?”
“Someone’s in the bathroom!”
His expression changed immediately.
Without asking another question, Ryan stood up and looked toward the hallway. His face lost all its color.
Instead of running toward the bathroom, he grabbed Emma’s hand.
“We’re leaving,” he said firmly.
“What?”
“Right now.”
He quickly unlocked the front door and guided her outside.
“Get into the car,” he said. “Lock the doors and call emergency services.”
Emma could hear the urgency in his voice.
She didn’t argue.
Within seconds she was sitting behind the steering wheel with the doors locked. Her hands shook as she reached for her phone.
She explained the situation to the emergency operator, giving their address and describing what she had seen.
The operator instructed her to remain inside the vehicle until officers arrived.
Ryan stood several feet away from the house, watching every window without taking his eyes off the building.
Minutes felt like hours.
Finally, flashing lights appeared at the end of the street.
Several police officers arrived, carefully surrounded the property, and entered the house after announcing themselves.
Emma watched from the car, barely breathing.
After what seemed like an eternity, one officer approached Ryan and spoke quietly.
Ryan nodded several times before looking toward Emma.
His expression was difficult to read.
Relief mixed with worry.
Soon afterward, another officer came to Emma’s window.
“The house is secure,” he said calmly. “You’re safe now.”
Emma slowly stepped out of the car.
“What happened?” she asked.
“The individual has been taken into custody,” the officer replied. “Right now we’re still determining how long he had been inside the home.”
Emma looked toward Ryan, expecting him to feel relieved.
Instead, he seemed unusually quiet.
His eyes remained fixed on the house.
Something about his reaction didn’t make sense.
It wasn’t simply shock.
It looked more like recognition.
Emma suddenly realized that when she had first described the stranger, Ryan had never asked what the man looked like.
Instead, he had immediately known exactly what to do.
The thought settled heavily in her mind.
Was there something Ryan hadn’t told her?
As the police continued their investigation, Emma couldn’t ignore the growing feeling that the frightening discovery inside the bathroom might only be the beginning of a much larger story.
